About Guac Bowl
About Guac Bowl
Many, many years ago, I hosted a SuperBowl party and volunteered to make the guacamole. My roommate claimed he could make better guac. And so, the first Guac Bowl competition was born.
Every year since, the competition has grown larger and more complex. Trophies were introduced. Categories were added. And now, hundreds of guacs later, it has become the greatest and most celebrated guacamole competition/SuperBowl party in the world. That I know of. I saw one other one when I did a Google search, but it looked sort of eh.
We’ve been mentioned in all the finest media outlets (the Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, NBC Los Angeles, etc.)... We’ve expanded to the East Coast, with friends hosting their third annual Guac Bowl in Connecticut last year)... We’ve got merchandise, a great sponsor... and maybe someday, an official theme song.
The rules are simple: bring a guac, try everyone else’s guac, then vote. There are four categories open to competition:
•Best Traditional Guac (no weird ingredients),
•Best Alternative Guac (some special ingredient, or prepared unusually),
•Best Presentation (which has become, over the years, the most creative and impressive category -- see photos),
•The Icarus Award (for the guac that attempts to fly the highest, only to fall the furthest).
Guac tasting begins a couple hours before the SuperBowl, and continues throughout the first half. Trophies are awarded at halftime, so people who want to can settle in and watch the game, while digesting.
Someday, my hope is that Guac Bowl will become a national holiday. Help me achieve that dream, friends.
